Marrakesh is a vibrant city full of smells, colors and impressions. But it can also be overwhelming, especially if you're there for the first time. With these practical tips, you'll be well prepared.
1. Stay in a riad
For the ultimate Marrakesh experience, stay in a riad. These traditional Moroccan houses with a courtyard are located in the middle of the medina, putting you close to everything. We stayed at Riad Darino.
2. Arrange a transfer from the airport
Upon arrival at Marrakech airport, cab drivers can be quite pushy. Therefore, book a transfer through your riad in advance. This way you start your trip relaxed and can also easily find your riad in one go. How nice!
3. Buy an eSim
Stay online without hassle with a local SIM card, which is nice in a city where finding your way around is a bit more difficult. Through Airalo, you can order and pre-install an eSIM at home. Use discount code I&B3 for $3 off your first order.
4. Download an offline map
In the narrow streets of the medina, your Internet connection may be down. With an offline map on your phone, you'll always know where you are. Download maps.me for this, for example.
5. Make sure you have enough cash
ATMs do not always work and some stores do not accept cards. Get cash at the airport. We also got a Banque Populaire credit card there, which is accepted throughout Morocco.
6. Be alert to scams
Some well-known tricks:
-
Snake charmers in Djeema El Fna Square casually put a snake around your neck - then you have to pay.
-
Someone tells you that a street is closed and offers to show you another route - this also costs money.
Stay friendly but resolute if you don't want something.
7. Dress appropriately
Morocco is an Islamic country, and although Marrakesh is touristy, it is appreciated if you dress modestly. Think long pants or skirts and covered shoulders.
8. Haggling is the norm
Whether you're buying something at a market or taking a cab: haggling is part of the deal. Start with half the quoted price and work up from there.
9. French & Spanish will help you move forward
Although Arabic is the main language, many people speak French. Spanish is also often understood, especially by traders.
10. Ask permission for photos
The colorful souks are photogenic, but always ask permission before taking a picture of stores, stalls or people. Sometimes there is a small fee for this.
With these tips, you'll be all set for your trip to Marrakech. Have fun!
