Oslo: 6 adventures in the Norwegian capital

Posted on July 9, 2023

In the summer of 2016, Reinier and Iris visited Oslo! This was the first capital they visited in Scandinavia. The city has something for everyone, from fascinating museums to a cozy harbor. In this blog Oslo: 6 adventures in the Norwegian capital, we share our highlights.

Vigeland Park

Vigeland Park is one of Oslo's most popular attractions and an absolute must-see for art lovers. The park is named after the famous Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland and is home to more than 200 of his remarkable sculptures. These statues, made of bronze and granite, depict the human form. Stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens and see something different in each of the 200 statues.

The Opera House

Another highlight of Oslo is the Opera House . The building, which resembles a glacier rising from the water, not only hosts opera and ballet performances, but you can also relax on and around the building. Visitors can climb to the roof of the opera house for breathtaking views of the city and the fjord. We did this too and there is really plenty to see.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is one of Oslo's most recognizable buildings. Located at the end of the wide boulevard Karl Johans Gate, this palace is the official residence of the Norwegian royal family. As you admire the palace, you can witness the ceremonial changing of the guard, which takes place daily. When the king is not present, you can even catch a glimpse of the beautiful palace gardens, which are open to the public.

Akershus Fortress

On Oslo's waterfront lies the imposing Akershus Fortress , a medieval fortress that has served as a royal palace, fortress and prison. This historic site is now a popular attraction for visitors. Explore the old buildings, including the castle church and museum, where you can learn about the fortress's rich history. From the fortress walls you also have a breathtaking view of the Oslofjord and the surrounding city.

Museums such as the Kon-Tiki Museum

Oslo is home to a number of fascinating museums that offer insight into Norwegian culture and history. An absolute highlight is the Kon-Tiki Museum , dedicated to the famous Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl. Here you can admire the original Kon-Tiki raft, with which Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean in 1947. The Viking Ship Museum is another must-visit for history buffs, with its well-preserved Viking ships from the 9th century.

The bustling harbour

No visit to Oslo is complete without a visit to the bustling harbour. Oslo Harbour, located at the end of Karl Johans Gate and next to the city center, is a lively place full of activity, nice places and beautiful views.
