Our seven Vienna highlights

Posted on April 8, 2023

In 2018, Iris and her mother visited Vienna! Perhaps not the first city you think of when making a city trip, but the city is more than worth it. In this blog we share our seven Vienna highlights with you.

Schönbrunn Palace

One of Vienna's most iconic landmarks is Schönbrunn Palace , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This palace was once occupied by the imperial family (yes also by Empress Sisi) and is an excellent example of Baroque architecture. It has more than 1,400 rooms, including the beautiful Great Gallery and the impressive Hall of Mirrors. The palace also has beautiful gardens and fountains that can be admired all year round. Have difficulty walking? A train runs through the grounds that takes you to the various buildings.

Stephen's Cathedral

Another must-see attraction in Vienna is St. Stephen's Cathedral , an impressive Gothic cathedral that dominates the cityscape. Visitors can also climb the tower for beautiful views of the city. We passed this up because we knew we could also get a beautiful view in another way!

Talker

The Prater is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world and was opened in 1766. The most famous attraction in the amusement park is the Ferris wheel. It was built in 1897 for the anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I and from this Ferris wheel you have a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding areas. Exactly the reason why we missed the climb to St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Albertina

There are tons of interesting museums in Vienna. We were fans of the Albertina museum, which featured a lot of art by Bansky and Andy Warhol during our visit. In addition, the Albertina is known for its large collection of graphic artworks, including drawings, etchings and lithographs.

The Spanish Riding School

Vienna’s Spanish Riding School is one of the city’s most iconic and unique sights. It is a historic riding school that focuses on the traditional Austrian riding style, known as the “classical” or “Viennese” style. We ourselves do not have much with horses but it was wonderful to see the horses and riders performing the various exercises in such a beautiful building. Tickets can be bought here.

Vienna State Opera

If you are interested in music, Vienna is home to many famous composers, including Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss. Not surprisingly, the city is full of concert halls, operas and theatres. The Vienna State Opera is one of the most famous opera houses in the world and offers a varied programme throughout the year. Want to see a performance? Then order your tickets in advance.

Hotel Sarcher

Finally, Vienna is also famous for its culinary delights. It is home to many delicious dishes such as the Wiener Schnitzel but our real favourite is the Sachtertorte. A delicious chocolate cake. Eat the ‘original’ at Hotel Sarcher.
