Are you going to London soon? There is a lot to do in this city. In this blog, City trip London: practical tips, we give you the insights to make your stay enjoyable.
Take the train instead of the plane
Are you traveling from the Netherlands, Belgium or France? Instead of flying, consider taking the train. With Eurostar we traveled in only three hours between Rotterdam and London! Benefits? More leg room, bring what you want and wifi on board! Plus, you arrive at St. Pancras international station. From this station, you’ll be in the city center within 15 minutes.
The Oyster Card
An Oyster Card is a must if you want to travel with public transport in London! We would recommend it because it is a quick way to travel within the city and it is also a lot cheaper than taking an Uber. You can purchase an oyster card almost at any public transportation station. Besides that you find here more information about paying with your mobile.
A world plug
Type G outlets are used in the United Kingdom. Chances are you won’t use this type of outlet in your country, so don’t forget to bring your world plug.
Book in advance
Nearly 20 million people visit London every year, this means the city is almost always very busy. Make a list ahead of time of the sights you want to see and make sure you make reservations in advance to ensure a spot. This also applies to restaurants where you would like to eat.
Point A Hotels
Hotel rooms in London are small and relatively expensive! So we were happy to come across the British chain Point A Hotels. We stayed at Point A Hotel Shoreditch and had a relatively spacious room with lots of handy storage. In addition, a delicious breakfast was served every morning and the staff was extremely helpful! Highly recommended.
Consider the London City Pass
Planning to see many of London’s landmarks from the inside? Consider the Londen City Pass. We did not purchase the pass because we found a great deal at Get Your Guide that gave us access to the London Eye, a 24-hour ticket for the hop on hop off and a river cruise on the Thames.
Go to a free museum
Many museums in London are free! For example, consider the Natural History Museum but also the Tate Modern! Check here the list with free museums.
Avoid the ATM
London is not a cheap city. So make sure you don’t have to pay extra fees if you do get tempted to withdraw cash. Everywhere in London we were able to pay on the spot with our card or even our mobile. So leave those extra commission fees be!
