Discover Thailand with a food intolerance

Posted on February 9, 2023

Traveling to Thailand with a food allergy or intolerance can be challenging. In this blog I share my experiences. I spent three weeks in Thailand and visited Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khao Sok, Ao Nang and Koh Phi Phi. Are you planning to go to Thailand, but are you unsure whether this is possible? Then read on and discover Thailand with a food intolerance!

I myself have a gluten and lactose intolerance and a mild peanut allergy. For me, it was sometimes a challenge to avoid gluten and peanuts. In Thai cuisine they use a lot of coconut milk and no lactose, so that was very doable. In terms of gluten, it was especially a challenge with the sauces used and when I felt like having a Western breakfast. Furthermore, many recipes contain nuts or traces of nuts. So you have to pay close attention to this if you have a nut allergy. You can often indicate this clearly, because most people speak English, but I thought it would be best if there was a card with allergen information. I also ate a lot of smoothie bowls, because I knew what went into them. Below are some of my favorite restaurants in the places we've been.

Café 8.98

Cafe 8.98 was our favorite restaurant in Ao Nang for breakfast, lunch and dinner! You can put together your own bowl with, for example, rice or quinoa and they have many more tasty options on the menu. You can eat well here with an allergy or intolerance. The menu indicates what nuts contain and what is gluten and lactose free. Even if you have to take all these things into account, they still have plenty of choice. They even have gluten free bread!

Brekkie Organic Cafe & Juice Bar

At Brekkie you can have a good breakfast or lunch in Bangkok. The menu is huge, so something for everyone! They have tasty superfood bowls, where the menu says exactly what’s in it. The acai bowl is a must!

Goodsoul’s Kitchen

A very good restaurant to eat with allergies! The restaurant is located in Chiang Mai and Bangkok and you can eat plant-based. All ingredients are listed on the menu and it is stated which dishes are gluten-free. In addition, they also have gluten-free pizza and pasta!

Smile Organic Farm Cooking School

If you want to take a cooking class, we can recommend Smile Organic Farm Cooking School in Chiang Mai! You can indicate in advance what your allergies are, so that’s very nice. This is then taken into account when preparing the dishes. What I also liked is that you make six dishes and then know exactly what is in those dishes. It was delicious and luckily we got a recipe book with all the recipes we made, so we could recreate it at home!

ACQUA Restaurant

A very good restaurant on Koh Phi Phi if you need to eat gluten free! They have a whole page on the menu with all gluten free dishes listed. This makes it very easy to make a choice. You can also enjoy delicious food here, Western or Thai.

Patcharee French Bakery

The place for breakfast or lunch on Koh Phi Phi! They have a very extensive menu with gluten-free, lactose-free and vegan options. The smoothie bowl is a must!

Bamboo bistro

Bamboo bistro is a cozy restaurant in Khao Sok where you can eat Thai and Western. With a gluten and lactose intolerance you can eat many Thai dishes and here all ingredients were also listed on the menu. Furthermore, the map indicates in red where nuts are located.
