Discover fairytale Slovenia

Posted on November 14, 2022

Slovenia is hot! The country was recently named one of the countries you must visit in 2023 by National Geographic. In addition to the fairytale capital Ljubljana, there is beautiful nature. Did you know that the country consists of 62% forest? Perfect for a low-stimulus break in spring or autumn! In this blog we share our highlights.

Ljubljana, a compact capital

Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is small but beautiful! You can see a large part of the city within a day and a half. In any case, don't miss the following highlights:

  • The central point of the city is Prešeren Square. The famous salmon-pink Frančiškanska church can be found on the square. In addition, you can easily walk from the square to the Ljubjanica River with its beautiful bridges.

  • Do you want to have a beautiful view of the city? Then hop on the funicular to visit Ljubljanski Grad. From this 17th century castle you have a beautiful view of the city.

  • The dragon is the symbol of Ljubljana. When you visit the city, you should definitely look for the 'dragon bridge'. Whoever finds it first! 😉

  • Are you, like us, crazy about street art? Then the Metelkova district is a great choice. There used to be a military barracks in the district, but the barracks and the area around the barracks have been transformed into a real color spectacle.

In total we had six full days to discover Slovenia from Ljubljana. We rented a car from Sixt for five days for only 250 euros. We discovered a large part of the with our brand new Polo

Predjama Castle & Postojna Caves

Just a 40-minute drive from Ljubjana you will find the beautiful Predjama castle and the Postojna caves. With a combination ticket you can visit both the castle and the caves in one afternoon. You can follow an interesting audio tour in the castle, which is partly located in a rock wall. The castle was still inhabited until the Second World War! The Postjojna caves can only be visited with a tour. You board a special train after which you drive another 2 km down. The guide will then take you into the wonderful world of these beautiful caves.

Lake Bled & Vintgar Gorge

The beautiful Lake Bled! When people think of Slovenia, the fairytale image of Lake Bled is often the first thing that comes to mind. We visited Slovenia in October and had the lake virtually to ourselves. You can choose to walk around the lake or walk to one of the viewpoints. Wear good shoes here because the paths are quite steep and you don't want to slip.

Not far from Lake Bled you will find the beautiful Vintgar gorge! If you visit the gorge in high season, it is advisable to reserve a time slot online. Are you visiting the gorge in the low season like we did? Then all you have to do is buy a ticket at the box office on the day itself. You can walk to the end of the gorge within an hour. After which you walk back to the parking lot through the forest.

Piran & Copper

Did you know that the Slovenian coastline is only 46 km long? We visited the port town of Koper and the coastal town of Piran!

From the cute coastal town of Piran you can admire the Italian, Croatian and Slovenian coasts. It is also wonderful to wander through the streets in the Venetian center and sit on a terrace.

Koper is one of the three port cities of Slovenia. Large cruise ships also dock in this city. This also applies to the Buyer; wander through the medieval center and admire beautiful Venetian architecture.

Velika Planina

As far as we are concerned, Velika Planina was the absolute surprise of Slovenia! At 1600 meters above sea level you will find a beautiful shepherd's village, with authentic shepherd's huts. The village is still in use but also serves as an open-air museum. You can make beautiful hikes on the plateau. There are also plenty of restaurants where you can relax and recover from the walk. You can reach Velika Planina from the village of Kamniška Bistrica, where you can buy a ticket for the cable car and chairlift that takes you to the plateau.

All in all, we can say that Slovenia is a versatile country with beautiful nature and culture! A place where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings in the low season without too many stimuli.
