Our Porto mini guide

Posted on April 16, 2023

Fan of Portugal? Then you can't miss Porto in the northwest of Portugal. This second city has all the ingredients for a perfect city trip. In our Porto mini guide we give you six tips for an unforgettable visit.

The Douro

The Douro can be seen as the lifeline of the city. From the historic Ribeira district you have beautiful views of the river and of course it is possible to take a cruise on the river, where you can enjoy the landscape and the various bridges.

Ribeira

As mentioned, the Ribeira district has beautiful views of the Douro River, but the district has more to offer, narrow streets, colorful houses and a wide choice of bars, restaurants and cafes, where you can enjoy local specialties such as Franceshina (a meat and cheese sandwich covered in sauce), a favorite of Iris.

Cheers: Port at Calem

When you think of Porto you think of…. Port wine! Calem is one of the most famous port wineries in Porto and offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history and production of port wine. And… taste port! We (Reinier and Iris) enjoyed the tasting and took a bottle home!

Torre dos Clerigos

Another place not to be missed during your visit to Porto is the Torre dos Clérigos , a beautiful Baroque bell tower that towers high above the city. The tower is 76 meters high and offers beautiful views of the city and the river. Climbing the tower is a must-do activity in Porto, but be prepared for quite a climb.

Azulejos & Street Art
Fan of art in the outdoor space? In Porto you have a perfect mix of old and new. You will find beautiful azulejos (Portuguese tiles). At Sao Bento station, the tiles represent scenes from the history of Portugal. You will also find beautiful street art throughout Porto. Take one of the many street art tours to spot the most beautiful murals.

Enjoy the coast
If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Porto, a visit to the beach is a great option. The closest beach from Porto is Praia de Matosinhos , just 30 minutes by public transport from the city center. This long sandy beach is popular with tourists and locals alike and offers various activities such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Next to the beach you will also find a promenade full of restaurants and bars where you can enjoy local dishes and drinks.
