Discover the beautiful region of Split

Posted on December 11, 2022

More and more tourists know how to find the beautiful region of Split in Croatia! No wonder the region has something to offer everyone! Beautiful beaches, a rich cultural history and national parks just around the corner. In this blog, you can read all about the region.

Split

Split can be reached by plane within two hours from both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. The city is your base for exploring the entire region! But let’s not forget the special city itself. The Romans built a palace for Emperor Diocletian in 300 AD. Only from the 7th century onwards did residents settle around the castle and so the city slowly but surely grew into the city we know today. The city centre is compact, and most restaurants and shops can still be found in and around the palace. Wander around and don’t forget to take a look in the palace cellars where you will find cute stalls selling jewelry.

Done with walking around? Explore the city by bike!l We booked a bike tour through Baja Bikes and had a local tell us more about the national theatre, the cathedral, the palace walls, the Riva, aka the boulevard. The tour ended with a beautiful view of the city. Given that we visited the city in 40 degrees Celsius, we decided to skip the hike to the top of Marjan hill.

Seen enough cultural sites and are you visiting Split in the summer season? Then enjoy the busy sandy beach Bacvice or the less crowded pebble beach Kasjuni.

Krka National Park

Is just visiting Split worth it? Not if you ask us. You can see the city itself in just a day and a half. However, Split is the perfect base for day trips in the Split region. For example, the Krka National Park with dozens of waterfalls is just an hour and a half drive from the city. Tickets are available both on location and online for adults from €6.70. The park is known for its beautiful Skradinski Buk waterfall. Before 2021 it was possible to swim around this waterfall, but due to nature conservation this is no longer possible. You can enjoy a beautiful walk via jetties in the area around this waterfall. How do you reach the area around the Skradinski Buk waterfall? The Lozovac entrance is the main entrance to the park. You will find a large parking lot here where you can park your car for free. Then the shuttle bus (included with the entrance ticket) takes you to a place from which it is only a fifteen-minute walk to the waterfall! In the summer season you can also travel to the Skradin entrance where a boat will take you to the waterfall within 25 minutes.

Sibenik

Sibenik is located just fifteen kilometers from Krka. A nice city that was built by the Croats themselves and is known for its four fortresses, which have protected the city against invaders for many centuries. From the forts you have a beautiful view of the bay.

Trogir
Dozens of boat trips are offered from Split. A trip that you will always find on offer is the boat trip to beautiful Trogir! The city is located 25 km north of Split and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. Wander through the cozy center and don't forget to visit the market.

Sinj

Do you want to escape the hustle and bustle and have you seen the coast for a while? Then travel to Sinj, a village 35 kilometers north of Split. Sinj is known for its church and the painting the 'Miraculous Madonna of Sinj'. Stories show that the painting ensured that the Croats won the battle against the Turks in 1715. After that, the Madonna performed many more miracles. The town is also known for its Sinsjka Alka. An equestrian competition that has been held every first Sunday in August since 1715. The aim of the competition is for the riders to put their lance through a ring (alka). The riders receive points for this. Will you be in the area at the beginning of August? Then definitely take a look!

Burdock
In Klis you will not only find a beautiful fortress but also Stella Croatica! Stella Croatica is an experience center with a large estate. Artisan food, health and beauty products are produced on the estate. As a visitor you can see the entire process of developing the products and you can also learn more about production in the museum.
