The Dolomites: the best of Austria and Italy

Posted on November 13, 2022

The Dolomites are the best of Austria and Italy. The ski resort Dolomiti Superski is located in the northern part of Italy, in the province of South Tyrol. It is a large area where you can make beautiful tours and are you hungry or feel like a drink during or after skiing? There are plenty of restaurants and mountain huts where you can enjoy the sun and your beer. In this blog I list all the tips for a great winter sports holiday!

Dolomiti Superski

If you buy a ski pass for Dolomiti Superski, you can ski in twelve areas. You can find the prices for a skipass here. To spend the night there are plenty of villages to choose from. In the Val Gardena valley, for example, you can stay overnight in Ortisei and Selva (also called Wolkenstein). Also in the Val di Fassa valley, you can spend a good night in Campitello di Fassa or Canazei, for example. Which village is the best choice depends on what you are looking for. Keep in mind that in the Dolomites the après ski is not as big as in Austria, but you can have a quiet drink here after skiing.

Selva is the smallest village in Val Gardena, but the biggest in après ski. You also have direct access from Selva to one of the most beautiful ski routes: the Sella Ronda. Ortisei is an attractive village with a car-free center. You can ski to your hotel and the village has many facilities.

If you sleep in Campitello di Fassa, you cannot ski to your hotel, but you can take the Col Rodella gondola up and down. You then come out directly to a beautiful part of the ski area. Good wide slopes with views of the Sassolungo. The village is cozy and you have everything you need. Canazei is the most lively destination in Val di Fassa and here you will find most of the après ski bars. You can also ski all the way to the village.

Ski routes and more

Dolomiti Superski is a ski area with 1,200 kilometers of slopes. So you won’t get bored easily. You have beautiful routes such as the Sella Ronda or La Longia. Here are a few tips.

Sella Ronda

The Sella Ronda is a forty-kilometer tour in which you ski around the Sella massif. This route takes you into four ski areas and the views of the massif are equally beautiful everywhere. You can ski the route in two directions, the orange and the green route and the route is easy to start from Selva, Campitello and Canazei. You can ski this route just fine in a day.

La Longia

La Longia is the longest slope in the area. It runs from Val Gardena to Oritsei. If you want to do this route from one of the other villages, you will first have to take a little train from St. Christina. From the top of the Seceda you will descend all the way to Ortisei. The trip takes you over narrow paths among the conifers and through a gorge with frozen waterfalls. And will you be skiing the La Longia? Then be sure not to skip Cafe Val d’Anna for a well-deserved break! A tip for if you go later in the season. Then do this run before noon, because La Longia is on the sun side of the mountain and then the snow can quickly diminish in warmer weather.

Saslong

Another route is the Saslong descent. Every year the Super G takes place here, among other events. It is a steep slope, but a fun challenge! The descent ends in St. Christina where you can take a seat on a terrace to recover.

Bonus: Sass Pordoi

A tip not to be missed is to visit the Sass Pordoi. You can take the gondola to the top or hike one of the trails. Once at the top, you will have a wonderful view of the peaks of the Dolomites. You can buy some food and drinks at Terrazza delle Dolomiti and enjoy the view.

Restaurants

In Dolomiti Superski you have many mountain huts and restaurants where you can eat well. The Dolomites have the best of Austria and Italy and you can tell by the cuisine! Below you will find my favorites.

Rifugio Salei

The restaurant Rifugio Salei is number one. You can sit here with a beautiful view of the slopes and the Sassolungo. The food is good and so is the atmosphere and music. Once you sit here, you won't want to leave! And be sure to try the Kaiserschmarrn with a delicious Aperol Spritz .

Cafe Val d'Anna

I mentioned this cafe before. This café is located along La Longia and is known for its delicious apple strudel, but the rest of the food also looks delicious. Take a seat in one of the sun loungers and recover from skiing.

Piz Boé Alpine Lounge

While skiing the Sella Ronda you will pass this beautiful restaurant. Next to the Boé gondola you can take a break and have something to eat and drink. Outside you can order delicious pizzas and sandwiches, this was our preference. Inside, the choice is even more extensive.

Piz Seteur

Piz Seteur is located between Campitello and Selva. A cozy restaurant with typical South Tyrolean dishes, such as the wiener schnitzel, but you can also go on the Italian tour and opt for pizza or pasta.
