3 days in Budapest

Posted on September 5, 2023

Budapest is a great city for a city trip. There is a lot to see, the atmosphere is good and there are plenty of nice restaurants and terraces to recover from all that walking. We had a great time during the three days we were there and to make it easier for you we have made this plan. Read on for tips for 3 days in Budapest!

Day 1

We started the day at Blueberry brunch. After a delicious breakfast we went to the Buda part of the city. The districts of Buda and Pest are separated by the Danube and on the Buda side you will find sights such as Matthias Church, the Fisherman's Bastion and the castle. We walked to Buda via the chain bridge and from there took a small hop-on hop-off tuk tuk up. This costs 11 euros per person and runs over the entire hill. You can get in and out whenever you want. You can also take a lift up. This costs about 10 euros. Of course you can also walk up if you want or take bus 16.

Once at the top you have a beautiful view of the city. The Fisherman's Bastion itself is also very beautiful and definitely worth a visit. We walked further to the Buda castle and here you can also be amazed. We walked back down from Buda castle. Then it was time to rest on a terrace! We walked along the banks of the Danube and over the Elisabeth Bridge to Balna terrasz, a cozy terrace with a beautiful view over the river. There are a number of restaurants together here and it is a nice place to eat and drink.

When we finished our drink, we headed back towards the center. We walked through the market hall to the area with a number of shops. After shopping we went back to our Airbnb. This was located in the Jewish quarter and that is highly recommended, because you are close to everything! In the evening we ate at Beerstro14. A very cozy restaurant where you can enjoy delicious food!

Day 2

On the second day a bike tour with Baja Bikes was planned! Before we started this, we got a quick breakfast at Aran bakery. Then we walked to the starting point of the bike tour, the square at St. Stephen's Basilica. We booked the highlights tour and cycled past most of the sights in about 3 hours. The guide provided interesting information about everything and that was very fun and educational!

After the bike tour we had lunch at Cafe Brunch. They have several branches in the city and coincidentally one was close to the point where we had to return the bicycles. After lunch we walked around past the Shoes monument on the Donaukade and the Parliament Building. There was a beer festival in town, so we had to check that out too! Before we went back to our Airbnb, the famous chimney cake had to be tasted! This is a snack made of dough in the shape of a cone. You can fill it with ice cream, for example, and at Karavan, a nice place with food trucks, you can get a very tasty one!

In the evening we ate at Babka, a restaurant a little further outside the center but where you can enjoy a delicious meal. The restaurant is located near the departure point of several cruises and we had to be there because we had booked a river cruise! In the evening, all the sights along the river are beautifully illuminated and you have a very nice view from the water. We booked a one-hour tour through getyourguide and can definitely recommend it!

Day 3

We started our day at Cafe Brunch and then took the metro to Varosliget Park. This metro line is one of the oldest in Europe and is a lot of fun to take. The Szechenyi spa is located in the park and we relaxed here for a large part of the day. This is definitely worth a visit! For about 25 euros you can use the indoor and outdoor pools and saunas.

After our visit to the spa we walked through the city looking for the mini statues of Kolodko. These are located throughout the city and all have a meaning. If you type 'Kolodko' into Google Maps you can find them all.

In the evening we had dinner at Boho, a restaurant on the banks of the Danube. You can enjoy delicious food here and the view is beautiful. Would you like to go for a drink afterwards? Then go to one of the ruin bars such as Szimpla Kert!
