Curaçao: 8 practical tips

Posted on August 9, 2023

Are you going to Curaçao soon? Delicious!!! The island has much more to offer than beaches and there is plenty to do. In this blog Curacao: 8 practical tips we give you the ultimate hacks to be well prepared to go to the island.

1.      Money Matters

First, make sure that your bank card is set to world so you can withdraw money everywhere. In Curaçao, payment is made with the Antillean guilder, abbreviated as ANG or NAF (Dutch Antillean Florijn). At the same time, the U.S. dollar is also commonly used. Where possible, try to pay with the Antillean guilder, this is just a bit cheaper.

2.      Hire a car

Unfortunately, the public transportation network on the island is not that extensive. So we would recommend renting a car. Arrange this before departure through a provider such as Sunny Cars or through Alamo where we rented our car.

3.      Buy a SIM Card

Want to stay easily accessible during your stay in Curaçao and not spend too much with your regular provider? Buy a SIM card from a provider such as Digicel and use mobile data without worry. This means you can also use apps like Google Maps worry-free. Prefer not to buy a map? Then make sure you use an app like Maps.me to download maps that you can use offline.

4. Bring an empty bottle

You can drink the water from the tap in Curaçao. Ideal! Bring an empty drinking bottle such as a Dopper so you can tap nicely and take your bottle of water to one of the beautiful beaches on the island.

5. The world plug

If you’re lucky, you won’t need it-the world plug. In fact, there are many “Dutch” plugs to be found, however, the official type of outlet on the island is American, so bring it with you just to be sure.

6.      Manana Manana

Everything on the island goes a bit more relaxed! Be sure to adjust to this mindset and keep in mind that you will wait just a little longer in restaurants for your food and it may also take just a little longer to be helped in a store
.

7.      Choose your supermarket wisely

Heartily enjoy going to the Albert Heijn or the Van den Tweel on the island, especially if you recognize products from the Netherlands. However, these supermarkets are expensive. It sometimes pays to eat out yourself. Still want to go to the supermarket? Go for the supermarkets that look more local and that you find along the road. These are a lot more affordable.

8.      K’Pasa

Check on the website K’Pasa where the parties and more importantly the happy hours are. That way you can be sure to get the tastiest cocktails and Brasa’s for half the price and also dance with your feet in the sand.
